Signs to watch for
- Long-lasting nasal blockage, runny nose, or repeated sinus infections.
- Recurrent nosebleeds.
- Children who snore, breathe through the mouth, or often get ear infections (the adenoids may need checking).
- Sore throat, a lump-in-the-throat feeling, or hoarseness that does not go away.
- Ear pain, ear discharge, hearing loss or ringing in the ears.
- A lump in the neck, trouble swallowing, or suspected growths in the throat or larynx.
What happens during the examination?
- 1The doctor asks about your symptoms and does a brief examination to choose where to look.
- 2When needed, a local numbing spray is used and a thin endoscope is passed gently through the nose or mouth, or into the ear canal.
- 3The images appear on a screen so the doctor can show and explain them to you or your child’s parents. Images can be saved to compare at follow-up visits.
- 4The doctor then explains the next step: medication, observation, further tests, or surgery if needed.
Good to know before the visit
- The procedure usually takes only a few minutes; it can feel slightly uncomfortable but is not very painful.
- Bring any previous reports, scans and prescriptions.
- For young children, parents should reassure the child and help keep them still; the doctor will show how.
- Please call or message ahead to confirm the appointment time.
Frequently asked questions
Does ENT endoscopy hurt?
It usually causes only mild discomfort for a few minutes. The doctor can apply a local numbing spray first to make it more comfortable.
Can young children have an endoscopy?
Yes. The doctor uses a thin scope suited to children and guides the parents on how to hold the child. If the child is very frightened, the doctor will choose the timing and approach carefully.
Do I need to prepare in advance?
A routine diagnostic endoscopy usually needs no special preparation. Bring previous results and tell the doctor about allergies to numbing agents, heart conditions, or blood thinners.
