When to see a doctor

Signs to watch for

  • Fever with a sore throat, painful swallowing and loss of appetite.
  • Pulling at the ear, crying, ear pain or discharge from the ear.
  • A blocked or runny nose that lasts; snoring, mouth breathing, restless sleep.
  • Repeated throat, tonsil, ear or sinus infections.
  • Possible hearing problems, delayed speech or not responding when called.
  • Recurrent nosebleeds, or objects pushed into the ear or nose.
Process

How does the doctor examine a child?

  1. 1The doctor talks with the parents and the child to understand the symptoms and help the child feel at ease.
  2. 2The ears, nose and throat are examined with a light; a thin endoscope is used when needed to check adenoids, nose and throat.
  3. 3The cause is explained to parents: viral, bacterial or allergic, and medicines, including antibiotics, are used only when truly needed.
  4. 4Parents get home-care advice, warning signs for returning urgently, and a follow-up plan if monitoring is needed.

Q&A

Frequently asked questions

Does a child with a sore throat need antibiotics?

Most sore throats in children are viral and do not need antibiotics. The doctor examines and may use a rapid test for strep before deciding.

Which signs mean I should seek care right away?

Persistent high fever, severe ear pain, difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, being unable to swallow saliva, heavy bleeding, or a child who is drowsy and refuses to eat or drink.

Does snoring always mean adenoids?

It can, but it may also come from large tonsils, allergic rhinitis or other causes. Endoscopy helps the doctor assess more accurately.
