Signs to watch for
- Nasal blockage that lasts or keeps returning, reduced sense of smell.
- Thick nasal discharge, pain or pressure in the cheeks, forehead or between the eyes.
- Bouts of sneezing, itchy nose and clear discharge, especially seasonal or in certain environments.
- Post-nasal drip causing cough and throat clearing; snoring from nasal blockage.
- One-sided blockage, repeated nosebleeds, or foul-smelling discharge from one side.
How does the doctor examine and treat?
- 1A detailed history: duration, triggers, allergies and medicines already used.
- 2Nasal endoscopy to inspect the lining, turbinates, septum, polyps and discharge; a sinus CT scan is arranged when needed.
- 3Treatment follows the cause: nasal rinsing, nasal sprays, allergy medicines; antibiotics only when clearly indicated.
- 4For blockage from enlarged turbinates, a deviated septum, polyps or chronic sinusitis that does not respond to medicines, the doctor advises options such as turbinate or septum surgery or endoscopic sinus surgery.
Good to know before the visit
- Write down your symptoms, when they worsen and possible allergy triggers.
- Bring scans, previous results and old prescriptions.
- Avoid long-term decongestant sprays or drops before the visit.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need antibiotics for sinusitis?
Not always. Most acute sinusitis is viral and improves by itself. The doctor uses antibiotics only when signs suggest bacterial infection, such as symptoms lasting more than 10 days or severe symptoms.
Can allergic rhinitis be cured?
It is usually a long-term condition, but it can be well controlled by avoiding triggers, rinsing the nose and using medicines correctly. The doctor builds a plan for each person.
When is sinus surgery needed?
When proper medical treatment has not helped, when there are polyps or structural blockages, or when complications occur. The decision is based on endoscopy and imaging for each patient.
